Rasmussen women and the draft

Rasmussen Reports -

Most women said they are opposed to having to register for the draft in a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

In contrast, a majority of men said they would support having women register, according to the poll released Wednesday.

The poll found that 52 percent of women oppose requiring women to register, while 38 percent favor it and 10 percent are undecided.

Sixty-one percent of male respondents favored requiring that women register.

Overall, the split was more even, with 49 percent supporting and 44 percent opposing.

Most Republicans, 53 percent, said they oppose making women register for the draft, while 49 percent of Democrats said they favor it.

The poll comes after two top generals said they think women should be required to register for the draft and two House Republicans introduced a bill that would require it.

Discussions on women in the draft have arisen in recent weeks as lawmakers and military officials work to implement Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s order to open all combat positions to women.

Some have argued that order means there’s no longer a reason to exclude women from the draft.

Support for the draft in general is low. Overall, 29 percent said they think the United States should have a military draft. Support for a draft from men was at 36 percent and women at 21 percent.

Rasmussen surveyed 1,000 likely voters by phone from Feb. 3 to 4. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
